The BNP claims a majority — likely even a two-thirds majority — in Bangladesh’s general election. The Jamaat has not yet conceded, though opposition parties often refrain from doing so. A probable BNP supermajority will shape how it navigates the implementation of the sweeping reform package known as the July Charter, which the party is expected to steer in its favour. With that, we conclude this blog. The Bangladesh Election Commission is set to publish the official results at 10am today.
BNP candidate and chairman Tarique Rahman won in Dhaka-17 securing 72,699 votes. Jamaat candidate SM Khaliduzzaman was not too behind, bagging 68,300 votes.
BNP candidate SM Jahangir Hossain wins the race with 18,488 votes closely followed by NCP's Ariful Islam 13,050. This constituency saw 44.6% voter turnout with a total voter number of 6,05,398.
